The SDI Digital Underwater Photography Course at OCD Divers teaches you how to capture clear, vibrant underwater images using modern digital cameras. Whether you are brand new to underwater photography or looking to improve your technique, this course helps you understand camera settings, lighting, composition, and how to get the most out of your equipment. You may bring your own camera system or use one of OCD Divers’ cameras during training.

What You’ll Learn
This course focuses on practical skills and techniques for taking better underwater photos:
- Camera setup and operation: Understanding housings, controls, and essential settings.
- Lighting and exposure: Using natural light, strobes, and video lights effectively.
- Composition techniques: Framing, subject selection, and creating visually appealing images.
- Buoyancy for photography: Maintaining stability while shooting without disturbing the environment.
- Close‑up and wide‑angle techniques: How to approach different subjects underwater.
- Post‑dive workflow: Basic editing, file management, and image review.
Program Overview
The Digital Underwater Photography Course is ideal for divers who want to document their dives, improve their creative skills, or prepare for travel and advanced imaging. Training includes classroom instruction and optional open water photo dives at The Scuba Ranch, Balmorhea State Park, or during OCD Divers trips depending on conditions.
Prerequisites: SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent.
Minimum age: 18, or 10 with parental consent.
Equipment needed: A digital underwater camera system. Divers may bring their own camera or use OCD Divers’ cameras. A complete scuba kit appropriate for the dive site is required for optional photo dives.
Where Training Takes Place
Classroom and hands‑on camera training take place at the shop. Optional underwater photography dives are conducted at:
- The Scuba Ranch (May–Oct)
- Balmorhea State Park (Nov–Apr)
- OCD Divers Trips
