Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get scuba certified?
You complete your eLearning at home, then finish your in‑person training during one structured weekend at The Scuba Ranch or Balmorhea State Park. After four open water dives, you earn your SDI Open Water Diver certification.
Scuba certification near me?
You can start your scuba certification right where you’re sitting (or standing, or lying down — just don’t do it while driving). The eLearning portion is completed entirely online, at your own pace, from home, work, or anywhere in the world. For the in‑person portion, we use on‑site pools at The Scuba Ranch and Balmorhea State Park, so all confined‑water and open‑water training happens at the same location during your weekend. Every dive shop in DFW uses these same lakes — we just remove the extra pool trips and wasted transitions by doing everything on‑site. We can even bring all rental and purchased gear directly to the lake for you. Texas is big, and everyone has to travel to the dive site — but you never have to travel to our physical store unless you want to.
Can I get scuba certified near me in DFW or West Texas?
Yes. We train at The Scuba Ranch (May–October) and Balmorhea State Park (November–April). West Texas divers can review our West Texas certification guide to understand how the Weekender program works when you don’t have a local dive shop.
How long does scuba certification take?
Most students complete about eight hours of eLearning, followed by one organized weekend of in‑person training.
Can I get scuba certified in one weekend?
Yes. Our Weekender Open Water Diver Course is designed specifically for a clear, two‑day schedule that fits busy families and working adults.
How much does scuba certification cost?
We use clear, family‑friendly pricing with no hidden fees. All required training gear—BCDs, computers, regulators, wetsuits, and weights—is included for your certification weekend. Tanks and air fills are available through several rental options. Personal gear is either rented or purchased separately through OCD Divers. For Scuba Ranch classes, we collect the park entry fee at sign‑up. Entry fees to dive sites, travel, meals, and similar expenses are the diver’s responsibility. You can view optional personal gear bundles, tank rentals, and add‑on class options on our Open Water gear packages page.
Is SDI the same as PADI?
SDI, PADI, SSI, NAUI, and other major agencies follow the same international RSTC standards, which means the training requirements and certification outcomes are equivalent. Many divers ask for “PADI” simply because it’s the brand they’ve heard the most — the same way people say “Coke” when they mean a cola. SDI is fully recognized worldwide, and your certification is accepted at dive shops, resorts, and training centers across the globe.
I was certified years ago with a different agency. Does it matter if my family is getting certified through SDI?
No. All major agencies—SDI, PADI, SSI, NAUI, and others—follow the same international RSTC standards. Skills, safety requirements, and certification outcomes are equivalent. It’s similar to choosing Coke or Pepsi: different labels, same category. Your previous certification works seamlessly alongside your family’s SDI training, and you can all dive together without restrictions.
I’m already certified. Can I join the class with my child or spouse?
Yes. Certified divers can join as Inactive Diver Refreshers and participate alongside their family. You’ll complete a shorter eLearning module (about three hours) and go through the full confined‑water and open‑water training with your child or spouse. The refresher option is priced at $100 less than a full Open Water certification and is a great way to update your skills while supporting your family. Learn more here: Inactive Diver Refresh.
We also encourage parents—whether certified or brand‑new—to take the class with their child. It creates shared memories, builds confidence, and allows us to pair youth with a trusted adult for additional safety and comfort throughout the weekend.
I’m not sure about getting certified. Can I try scuba first?
Yes. If you want to experience scuba before committing to certification, you can try our Scuba Discovery Experience. This session lets you learn basic skills and try scuba in a controlled environment with an instructor.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Yes. You must be able to swim two hundred yards in any style and float or tread water for ten minutes.
Can a 10‑ or 11‑year‑old get certified?
Yes. Divers ages 10–11 can earn their Junior Open Water certification through our Private Open Water option, which offers a slower pace and additional instructor attention.
Can I complete scuba certification entirely online?
No. eLearning covers the academic portion, but all scuba agencies require in‑person confined water and open water training to earn certification.
Where are the training dives held?
Training dives take place at The Scuba Ranch (May–October) or Balmorhea State Park (November–April). Both locations have on‑site pools, so all confined‑water and open‑water training happens at the same site. You can explore conditions and tips in our Scuba Ranch diving guide and our Balmorhea diving guide.
My dive shop closed. Can my family still train with OCD Divers?
Absolutely. Many families come to us after their previous shop closed. Visit our Dive Shops Closing page for guidance.
Is the certification internationally recognized?
Yes. Your SDI Open Water Diver certification is valid worldwide.
